SERIOUS BULLS
Monday's sharp sell-off turned out to be nothing more than a one-day event, which a few days later has long been forgotten. The bulls found enough ammunition to drive this market higher and today received an assist from Fed chairman Bernanke.
Whether he will be right or wrong in the long-term remains to be seen, but today he supported the bullish cause in his speech when he remarked that "economic activity appears to be leveling out, both in the Unites States and abroad, and the prospects for a return to growth in the near term appear good."
Be that as it may, the market took these words as a late summer present, and the major indexes headed higher. Helping this cause was a better-than-expected report on existing home prices along with crude oil's highest close of the year. For the week, the Dow added 2%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose 2.2% and 1.8% respectively.
Our Trend Tracking Indexes (TTIs) followed the overall market and are now positioned as follows:
Domestic TTI: +6.16%
International TTI: +15.20%
Domestic TTI: +3.19%
It's still amazing to me that the market has come as far as it has considering that millions of jobs have been lost, with no improvement in sight. Once the stimulus runs out and further prop-up speeches will be recognized for what they are, I have to question the staying power of this rally.
However, right now we are participating and following the trend until it ends. Our sell stops will then get us back into safety mode if that is what market behavior dictates.
Have a good week.
