RECOVERY HOPES ALIVE
All week, the market was meandering, although with an upward bias, in view of the always uncertain employment report. In that sense, today's numbers did not disappoint as the unemployment rate remained steady at 9.7%, with the economy shedding only 36,000 jobs last month vs. an expected 60,000 plus.
These days, anything "less bad" is a good thing, and the markets took off and ended up with triple digit gains. For the week, the Dow added 2.3%, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 gained 3.8% and 3% respectively. This brings the indexes back into positive territory for the year after the selloff in January.
If there is one fly in the ointment, it's the fact that the S&P 500 has now had 6 up days in a row, which historically leads to some kind of a pullback. Right now, however, even the news out of Greece was market supportive as the new "Grecian formula" calls for radical spending cuts and taxes.
Our Trend Tracking Indexes (TTIs) rallied with the general market and have moved further away from their long-term trend lines by the following percentages:
Domestic TTI: +4.91%
International TTI: +1.78%
Hedge TTI: +5.67%
Next week, we will face a full economic calendar with reports ranging from inventories, initial claims, trade balance and retails sales. It'll be interesting to see if these reports are supportive of a further rally and if the S&P 500 can finally break through that glass ceiling and actually remain above it.
Have a good week.
Ulli...
